COVID-19 Prevention and Treatment

Covid-19 remains a genuine concern to our communities. But, the good news is that there are many steps you can take to protect yourself and others, and treatment options should you test positive.

Covid19 - Vaccination

When it comes to protecting yourself and those you love against potential severe illness, complications such as ‘long Covid’ or death from Covid-19, the best thing you can do is ensure your Covid-19 vaccinations are up to date.

Your vaccination protects you and assists in protecting those for whom vaccination is not an option due to medical conditions or age (at the time of writing, there is no vaccine approved for children aged 0-4).

Covid-19 vaccinations are now available free of charge to everyone aged 5 and over in Australia. Your local Capital Chemist Pharmacist can provide vaccine advice and administer vaccinations to eligible customers.

Further information about Covid-19 vaccines is available at https://www.health.gov.au/initiatives-and-programs/covid-19-vaccines

Good Hygiene Habits

Good hygiene remains critical as the increasingly contagious variants of Covid-19 make these basic practices even more important.

Hand washing, mask-wearing and physical distancing continue to play a part in reducing the spread of Covid-19.

Remember:

  • Wash your hands often, for 20 seconds with soap and water or with alcohol-based hand sanitisers
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth while outside of your home
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that are regularly touched
  • Maintain a distance of 1.5 metres from others wherever possible
  • Avoid handshaking or other physical greetings, large crowds and gatherings
  • Wear a clean, snugly fitted mask in situations where physical distancing is not possible

Rapid Early Diagnosis

Early diagnosis is vital to stop the spread of Covid-19, and ensures the best treatment opportunities.

We have resolved all supply chain issues and your Capital Chemist is well stocked with Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) for purchase. Eligible concession or health care cardholders can access free RAT’s through their pharmacy (between February to July 2022) by showing their Pension, Concession or Veteran card in store. Limits and conditions apply.

Whilst RATs provide a convenient at home diagnosis for many people, up to 20% of RAT results can be a false negative. If you have symptoms, even if you have tested negative on a RAT, we urge you to remain at home and isolate at least until you can obtain a PCR test to be sure.

Please note: This margin of error does not work in reverse. If you test positive for Covid-19 on a RAT, you can be reasonably confident in the result.

Treatment for Covid19

Vulnerable patients with a mild to moderate case of Covid-19 who are at high risk of progressing to severe disease can now access a PBS-subsidised oral treatment. This treatment is most effective if administered early and requires a prescription from your GP. If you believe you may need this medication we advise you to contact your GP as soon as your diagnosis is confirmed. Covid patients cannot attend the pharmacy to collect this treatment; you will need to send a support person or contact the pharmacy to arrange a Covid-safe delivery.

For many other members of our community the treatment remains similar to that of a common cold:

  • Rest
  • Fluids
  • Treat the symptoms with appropriate over-the-counter medications – ibuprofen, cold and flu tablets, cough medicine, and sore throat lozenges are all available at your local Capital Chemist.

While a mild case of Covid-19 may pass like a cold, a more serious case can be life threatening. We recommend you seek medical advice by phone if you have other health issues or are immune suppressed, if your symptoms are severe or if you are short of breath. In patients at risk an oximeter may be helpful; if oxygen levels drop below 92% urgent medical advice should be sourced.

Covid-19 is here to stay. Please talk to your local Capital Chemist Pharmacist if you have any questions about prevention or treatment of Covid-19.

If you test positive to Covid-19, please remember to isolate yourself, even from those you live with. Keeping your distance, wearing a mask and practising good hygiene all assist in slowing the spread.
